About Us

Golf, Ski, Bike, Hike, View waterfalls...

There's something for everyone to do, and all within easy driving distance from our clean, newly renovated, vacation apartments.

Avery County has the best combination of mountain golf courses and ski slopes in the South plus the highest average land elevation in Eastern America with spectacular panoramic views.  Other interesting landmarks like Linville Falls and Gorge, Grandfather Mountain, Roan Mountain, as well as other waterfalls abound.

Hiking options range from the rugged Appalachian Trail to leisurely hikes off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Beech and Sugar Mountains offer skiing, snowboarding, and tubing in the winter months with beginner to advanced courses, including night skiing!  Sugar Mountain is approx. 30 minutes away, Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing about 15.

Book a fly fishing trip with a local guide, or just enjoy the fall color--especially from the Blue Ridge Parkway!  Be sure to check out the Viaduct where it crosses over Grandfather Mountain.

Shopping, Fine Dining, Local Crafts, and More

Visit local Vineyards like Linville Falls Winery, Banner Elk Winery, and Grandfather vineyard and winery, for tastings and special events like live music and tours.

Altapass Orchard is a great historic site right off the Blue Ridge, featuring the Overmountain Men and their role in the Revolutionary War, and the American victory at the Battle of King's Mountain.  The orchard also contains a live music venue, in addition to great ice cream!

Asheville (around an hour away), has more breweries per capita than any other city in the US.   Roughly 100 local beers can be sampled there, including offerings from:  Highland Brewing Co., Asheville Brewing Co., Catawba Brewing Co., New Belgium Brewing, French Broad River Brewery, and so many more.

Arts and Crafts lovers will find plenty to do from the acclaimed Penland School of Crafts. and Penland Gallery, to local offerings from the many shops in the area.

Relax and Unwind!

Perhaps you need to get away from the hustle and bustle and chill...  We've got the place for that!  Enjoy meals on one of the outdoor decks overlooking the creek (which 'babbles' soothingly...), or the front decks with mountain views.  Either way you will soon find you've slowed down to 'Mountain Time'.

Halfback Mountain: Where Dreams Do Come True!

The whimsical names the locals have for us from 'off' (the mountain) include 'halfbacks'. Having nothing to do with football, what they mean is:  born in the midwest, moved to Florida,  ended up halfway back....  Ah, but once you've spent time in the mountains, time slows down, you learn to talk slower.

The majesty of nature shouts for us to notice!

So Halfback Mountain is more a state of mind than a specific location, even though we do live here in Avery County enjoying God's country.
